According to a message posted from the band on Metallica.com, their new album is due out by the end of this year, with Rick Rubin at the production helm. Rubin's skills are the best in the biz, and I think many of us are happy they canned Bob Rock, the guy responsible for the last batch of crappy albums from Metallica. Still, we think these guys need more than a new producer. They need high tops and dirty jeans, James needs long hair and Lars needs to not talk so much; they need to be the Metallica of old.
Here's an idea: Bring back Dave Mustaine.
He has the edge and the metal cred Metallica needs to regain. There needs to be some tension and competitive rivalry within the band to make them great again. Imagine the speed of Mustaine's boney fingers racing over the chunky palm muted chords of Hetfield.
As far as who would sing, let's introduce a new genre: Thrash Metal Duets.
We may have just reinvented metal.
