Heavy Metal has been long regarded as music for clenched fists and gritted teeth. It’s a form of expression that provides catharsis for primal emotions including anger, resentment and hatred, and its fans have been deemed by elitists to be primitive, unenlightened and, well, not too bright. But a recent study in England conducted at the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth might make those arrogant bastards eat their words.
According to a story in the British newspaper The Independent, more than one-third of students surveyed rated heavy metal to be among their favorite music styles, and praised the “visceral brutality” of the genre. Researchers discovered that gifted students listened to metal to vent their aggression, and that those with low self-esteem were particularly compelled by the intensity and power of the music form, especially if contained an “emotionally charged or overtly political message.”

“You can’t really jump your anger into the floor and listen to music at the same time with other types of music,” said one student who participated in the study.
