Before guitarist Larry LaLonde joined Primus, he played for the seminal San Francisco thrash/death band Possessed. But before he joined, the group recorded its 1984 demo "Death Metal" (which may have been the first reference to the emerging genre) with guitarist Brian Montana. In 1985, Possessed released its hugely influential debut album Seven Churches which featured LaLonde and included recorded versions of the demo songs along with speaker-bursters like "The Exorcist," "Pentagram" and the title cut .The next year Possessed recorded its second disc, the equally harrowing Beyond the Gates, which was highlighted by "The Heretic," "March to Die" and "Beast of the Apocalyps." In 1987 the group released its final recording, the five-song EP The Eyes of Horror, which was produced by guitar shredder Joe Satriani.
A couple years later, frontman Jeff Becerra was mugged and shot, which left him paralyzed from below the waist. Even so, he continues to perform and has scheduled an appearance for the recently reunited Possessed at this year's Wacken Open Air Festival in Wacken, Germany from August 2 to 4.
