The winner of last week’s Who Rocks Harder was Pantera, who beat Slayer by an overwhelming majority.This week, we’ve got a more theological contest — a battle of good and evil that’s demonstrates the full range of independent metal. The first band is As I Lay Dying, the Christian metal group that won the “Ultimate Metal God” award in MTV2’s All That Rocks contest in 2006. They’re up against Deicide, the pioneering death metal band whose frontman, Glen Benton, deplores Christianity and once branded an inverted cross in his forehead.
The videos are As I Lay Dying’s “Nothing Left” (shown above) which was directed by Brian Thompson and Deicide’s “Homage For Satan” (displayed below), directed by Alfred Tomaszewski and Matthew Stawski. This is so totally unfair! How can secular metal fans take Christian metal seriously if they don’t represent the genres correctly? AILD is traditional metal, whilst Deicide is death metal, and one of the best ones at that. If you want a real “good v. evil” death metal comparison, listen to a Deicide song, then listen to a Sacrificium song, a Christian death metal band. They should do a good vs. evil thrash vote, with Metallica vs. old Living Sacrifice or Megadeth vs. old Tourniquet. That would be good.
Since when is AILD Christian Metalcore??? They are the Metal band everyone needs to know about and they’re a very innovative and continually evolving Metal band that also integrates Thrash and Hardcore. As well as writing about topics that matter to them. Even if that topic is Christ. Deicide has and will continue to rule the Death Metal scene with more intense, soul-snatching, utterly chaotic pieces that are their very essence. I am a huge fan of both groups. I just wish MTV would have pitted each against more similar sounds.
I listen to both death (few) and black (shitload) metal. Big ass fan. However, comparing Deicide to As I Lay Dying is like comparing Emperor to The Devil Wears Prada… It doesn’t work. Death metal vs. metalcore? I am a worshipper of black metal, seen many black hearts in concert. I look down upon metalcore as a trendy excuse for kids to be “metal”. I only listen to true death metal such as Death etc due to it’s technicality. Death metal such as Deicide is just single note riffin Satan homage payin with little technicality. AILD at least comes up with fresh ideas. In this case AILD scrapes by (although it leaves a sour taste in my mouth), however if it was between AILD and Dark Tranquility for example, Dark Tranquility owns.
I am just as big of a fan of AILD as i am of Deicide. But when it comes to who is the more “heavier” of a band Deicide would have to take that. Besides that fact how can you even compare extreme death metal to christian metal-core? they are very different if you ask me.

how could you compare the heaviness of as i lay dying to deicide? as i lay dying is a new-age, bullet for my valentine clone, featuring incomplete musicians that produce, at best, a hardcore emo over lyrics bubbling with mental weakness and insecurity. deicide, on the other hand, has been churning out the same technical death metal for a couple decades now, and has finally reached the mainstream with their newest release, the stench of redemption. i feel that this release pales in comparison to earlier material, such as Once Upon the Cross and Insineratehymn, but still demonstrates the brutality of deicide. as i lay dying is made for the weak and would be a good pick if i needed a soundtrack for self-pity and suicide. deicide will continue to ravage the soft wholesome christian music scene as they always have, their unholy battering ram will rumble forward, and they will remain unchallenged in the world of metal where ever the term “heavy” may be implied

And Cannibal Corpse is the best death metal band on the planet, both of them played right in the middle on the concert. Based on talent and integrity, the SHOULD have headlined the tour.
