But when you weight one against the other, there are definitely differences as well as similarities. While both have flirted with nu-metal in the past and are now pretty single-mindedly fixed on writing thrash and death-based songs that incinerate, Machine Head tend to take a more technical, multi-dimensional approach and DevilDriver go straight for the jugular. Yet even DD have a solid repertoire of atmospheric flourishes and heavy metal hooks that permeate the cranium-bashing beats. And while Machine Head can get melancholy or even (gasp) tender, they’re also more than capable of heavy-duty quality brain-bashing. Both groups have a charismatic frontman seasoned from years of abuse in other bands (Machine Head’s Robb Flynn in Vio-Lence, DevilDriver’s Dez Fafara in Coal Chamber). And both stage monumentally intense live shows.
So you tell us, what does each band have that the other doesn’t, and in the end, who rocks harder, Machine Head or DevilDriver?

OMFG! This is the bands they gotta pit. DD was a side projet that was awesome. They are fast pace and packs a punch but as it was said yeah it was jugular straight to the point. Machine Head is still raw adn edgy. Technically, they make masterpieces even with songs as long as 9 mins(HALO). An eye opener both bands with both albums in my best metal album list but Machine Head with a grammy and a high possibility of winning, MACHINE HEAD!

ITs not fair to pit DD’s The Last Kind Words against anything. It in my opinion is their worst album. The Fury Of Our Maker’s Hand was much better. But having listened to both, DD definately is the best, Machine Head is just not heavy in the right ways for me.

MachineHead????? Really? Everything Ive Heard from them has just disappointed me. “the Blackening” was the least disappointing but rarely interesting except for “Aesthetics..” and “Slanderous”.
DevilDriver sounds most like the perfect band to me than any others i can think of. Anyways I like Dez’s screams/voice/lyrics and DevilDriver’s guitar better than Flynn’s work. It may not be popular opinion, but I just cant get into MachineHead at all.

The Blackening is an incredible album! and yes, the last kind words was not as good as Fury. But my vote is with DEVILDRIVER for sure!!!

I am a fan of both, but Devildriver rocks harder than Machine Head. If Machine Head’s latests album was full of songs heavy as Aesthetics of Hate they would have a better chance. Devildriver all the way.

D-E-V-I-L-D-R-I-V-E-R!!!! All the way. The Blackening was a classic, no doubt, but what was up with Machine Head from ‘97 up until then?? They were lost for a great long while. On the other hand, all three D-E-V-I-L-D-R-I-V-E-R albums have KILLED!
