You guys voted Dream Theater’s “Constant Motion” as the second best video of 2007 (we beg to differ, but that’s the joy of a good Democracy), so you should pee your pants at the arrival of the band’s new video for “Forsaken,” which should fare at least as well in this year’s viewer’s poll.
Guitarist John Petrucci has written a lengthy summary of the song and video, which we’ll subject you to before we let you watch the thing. Or, just skip ahead and click on the video box. Hey, it’s a free country — for now.
“The song ‘Forsaken’ is essentially a vampire story based on an early 1800’s short story by a well known Russian novelist,” writes Petrucci. “It centers on the main character Leo, who is visited nightly by a phantom named Alice. He is both intrigued and horrified by this ghost like image of a woman whom seems hauntingly familiar to him. Her seduction entails nightly mesmerizing journeys into the dark past where she floats through the skies weightlessly along with Leo visiting such places as Paris and ancient Rome. All the while she repeats the words, ‘I have come for you’ and ‘You are mine.’ “So captivated is Leo that he doesn’t even feel the sting of her vampire kiss and his body slowly gives itself up to the phantom as the story goes on.
“In the anime video created for the song, the director chose to give the lyric a futuristic twist, and play with the storyline a bit. Now, our main character is visited by a demon like harvester of human blood. Her purpose is to supply otherwise lifeless mannequins with this blood so that they may live and reenact some of the darkest moments in history.
“I always knew that an animated adaptation would be the perfect avenue to colorfully illustrate this horror story. Working with the director and choosing Japanese style anime as the artistic medium was an incredible opportunity. From the modern interpretation to the character development, storyboards and finally the animation, it was a unique and exciting experience to be a part of. I’m really happy to see the song come to life and I think people will enjoy this entirely new and unique perspective that was created for “Forsaken.”

what can one say of Dream Theater? If anyone follows their music, one knows the depth of this band. Their music touches one in the deepest way possible, like no other has……. truly one of the best bands ever! Praise be unto Yahweh! For the wonderous gift He has given them and us!!

Outstanding! These guys are amazing- I agree with the videography- they have more than enough music to put something together. I want these guys to be huge! The reason why a lot of people do not watch your network is because you don’t play more bands like this. Fantastic song, fantastic band, fantastic video. I have been a DT fan for my years. I wish they would show that video. The problem wih it is that if they show that video, many other bands would realize, they need to practice more. DT has it all, an awesome group of musicians and a singer with an amazing voice. One that actually sings, not screams or grunts. Rock on DT.

I think the most amusing part about the jab at DT is the fact that there is no mention of the author’s name. Maybe it’s all the better because to add their name to this would give them something by which to gain notoriety. As we all know, we have enough famous airheads, we don’t need another.

Its about time. DT is the only band out there with the depth in there song writing, that I know of, that could do a killer, full length movie. Would love to see that! Great job on this vid. I think (Dark Eternal Night) would be the best fit for Headbangers Ball though. Make a vid for it, and blow everyone else away. If you haven’t heard the whole CD its a must. Absolutely fantastic! I am a film student in Tampa, and I constantly think of idea’s for music video’s for songs, and with ‘Forsaken’, I had an idea that was similar in that it was to be animated in a similar fashion, sort of how Linkin Park’s ‘Breaking the Habit’ video is. I had no idea of the storyline and that it’s a vampire story! Now all we need is a video for both ‘In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1 and 2′! Those two songs are absolutely amazing!

Headbanger’s ball used to be great!!!!!! I watched it religiously in!!!(The R,R days!) There is more than one kind of Metal! Not everything is a scream! Not taking away from any of those bands. Some of it I like!! But that not all I want to hear.

Just watched the video on Headbanger’s Ball a couple minutes ago, and it was amazing watching it on my big screen compared to over the internet. It was a climatic part of the show for me as well, considering the bands leading up to the premier weren’t very interesting to me, with the exception of maybe Protest the Hero. Overall, I think this is the best Dream Theater video next to Pull Me Under.

I am a very big fan of Dream Theater…I feel as though whatever they create is at the cutting edge..I saw/meet them in Boston last summer am was trully amazed by their performance!
This video is no exception..while, to me, it seemed shaky in some parts…I loved what they did with this video! AWESOME!
My best bud and I saw Dream Theater on their recent North America tour in both Montreal and Toronto. We have seen them several times before, but we wanted to make an awesome trip out of it, and it was! (we both live in Greenville, NC) I was personally hoping that they would play this song live, but they didn’t and I still was not disappointed. Kudos to Dream Theater for keeping me listening to music and still playing guitar after almost 20 years. You truly are the best band of ALL time! I have been a LOYAL fan since the late 80’s.

This was not what I expected for the video to this song. I must say that it is even better than what I had imagined! I love the futuristic twist. There could be a fascinating story world here to be explored by the animators and DT. I would like to see this story continued perhaps on a future DT album. What do you think?

Dream Theater continue to do things on their terms. The song is fantastic, as is the entire album and the video is descriptive and to the point. Everyone has their own opinions. My opinion, I think it’s wonderful and creative. I’m glad that you guys are creative because someone has to be other than sitting at a computer all day downloading stuff. With this video at least my whole family can enjoy it together, in the FAMILY ROOM, and that’s what matters.

This video is just OK. I would of loved to have seen a little bit of band performance (like Constant Motion) in it also. DT rocks and I’d hate to see them change anything to appease the masses. We (DT) fans don’t need MTV to see them. MTV is for people who have never been lucky enough to have enjoyed Dream Theater over the last couple of decades. I’ve taken many friends to their shows since the very early 90s, and every one of them has come away from the show awe-stricken. These guys are definitely the top of the Prog-Rock food chain, and should remain there for quite some time to come.

Dream Theater is our little secret (as far as the masses go in the fan clubs)…..They certainly do deserve the mainstream but the great music and record execs in this country seem to push the same stuff down our throats. I am proud to say I have been a DT fan since the Images and Words days and will always remain a loyal fan and fan club member. After meeting the band on several occasions over the years…I can honestly tell you that they are the real deal. Appreciative of the fans and each one is a virtuoso in the respective fields. We can only hope the execs see the light some day. Let the fans decide what they want to hear. At least let the music be heard and supported….let the people decide what gets played. Enough Pop and Rap…..long live Dream Theater……..

Very interesting and artistic. I never like when they cut away from the original song for time, but at least the solo was intact! I also liked the fact that DT is on the wall in posters in his room in the beginning, pretty funny.

I doubt that DT will become a mainstream “listener friendly” band. I mean that’s why Mike Portnoy almost left the group years ago during the beginning because some of the members were falling into the temptation of music execs and money. They are too good of a band to stop making incredible music just to be on MTV.

MTV says “we beg to differ” about Dream Theater? Do they even have a clue as to what real music is? (Nah, they just take offers from producers who only care about making money..not about “music”..or at least what those producers think is music) Dream Theater is pretty much the MOST talented band in the US. (anyone that argues this either hasn’t listened to them, or has an IQ under 80) Can you think of any other bands out there that have had ALL of their instrumentalists attend Berklee or Juliard? But then again you need to have an IQ over 120 to really appreciate this. Sorry if that eliminates about 80% of the US population who only listen to music “that they can dance to” (In which they are rarely dancing to when they listen to it…go figure). Just because Dream Theater doesn’t advertise as well as per say “Paramore” doesn’t mean they are less of a band at all. They don’t need to advertise, people find them, they dont have to advertise to catch people on 1 lousy 2 note chord riff.

Video is very interesting. I like how there are pictures of DT on the wall in scene where the guy rips off the IV’s. Would have been interesting to see DT play this in the video, however, it would have been odd to go in between anime and live action.

The animation and direction of it was gorgeous and keeps in line with the mood of Dream Theaters music.

This song will not work with Headbangers Ball fans. This is reminding me of when Pull Me Under came out and was all heavy and then their second video was much tamer. This album is one of their heaviest and they obviously have a more metal appeal this round but give us a video that looks like it comes out of a My Little Pony movie?
