Is this video worth breaking your foot for?

That’s a rhetorical question, but the answer’s irrelevant. It was actually the shoot for The Dillinger Escape Plan’s yet-unreleased “Black Bubblegum” video the day before this one was filmed that resulted in guitarist Ben Weinman breaking his foot. For “Milk Lizard,” he rolled up to the set in a wheelchair and played in a cast — but you’d never know it from his frantic, energized performance, while probably pushed a few fractured bone fragments in directions that didn’t help that shattered foot heal any faster. Oh, well, you know what they say about bleeding for art.

Check out what Weinman and director Ilan Sharone have to say about the video here. And watch it again on Headbangers Ball this Saturday on MTV2.

  1. Soooo gooood.

Check out our interview with DEP on Sly-fi.com:

  2. […] Videoclipul nou Dillinger Escape Plan: “Milk Lizard” […]

  3. Of all the @@@#*~ songs on Ire Works they pick this one 4 a video. Stupid video for a stupid song.

  4. Awesome video boys! DEP will always rock!

  5. VVVV dude, have you been under a friggin’ rock? Pennie bailed on DEP last year to join Coheed and Cambria.
new vid’s not terrible, but i was a bit disappointed. still an awesome song/album

  6. I blew the speakers out of my comp, so I have no idea what the song sounds like, but judging by the video, I would guess not very good. Calculating Infinity was one of the best records ever period. Is Penne even still in the band?

  7. As Always Rockin The Show! Wicked Video Ire Works is a complete Masterpiece!

  8. This video is soooo cool. Tennis player is cute and very funny. Great job.

  9. wow. next time you guys want to shoot a video, shoot the live performance part then lets film me taking a ??~@ on a plate. I think it will invoke more emotion than a flying bar stool. Great band, the new record is good, this video is a waste.

  10. Heh, Good to see my old stomping ground being used as the set for this video…Orange Countys only punk rock, and billy bar!

  11. They did make one for Black Bubblegum it says it if you read it. The song is good regardless and the video kicks ass guys!

  12. dumbest song on the album. they should have made a video for black bubblegum if they wanted to use one of the more listener friendly songs . the horns in this song are just cheesy.

  13. […] We passingly mentioned Dillinger Escape Plan yesterday while talking about the very different metal crossovers Pig Destroyer and what they really do to earn a living. Here the Jersey boys are in the flesh with the spankin’ new Ilan Sharone-directed video for Ire Works jam “Milk Lizard” (appropriately set in Milk Lizard bar). We’ve read a few pieces where the group discusses the importance of Faith No More (possibly reuniting?) burning a path in the mainstream for uncompromising metal crews: It’ll be interesting to see how far DEP can go on the back of their catchier new tunes like this one and even more Faith-y “Black Bubblegum,” of course. Who knows, flying barstools, hot punk chicks, kindness to the elderly, bad 3-D animation, and great songwriting go a long damn way. (via Headbanger’s Blog) […]

  14. dude that little dance by the tennis player is too funny….best part of the video!!

  15. Some of you people are idiots. Most of the album is heavy/screaming stuff… but this song is just one of the more public friendly ones out there. They had this @*?@ on Miss Machine too.

  16. Cool video. The band are great and I kinda like the sexy tennis player too!

  17. Hahaha.. Everyone who hasn’t even heard the rest of the album should shut the f*ck up, because this thing is GENIUS. Sure, there might be disappointments to some people, but if you understand evolution in music and if you understand that people can’t write the same songs over and over (it becomes BORING), you can see that this album is beautiful in its own way. They put their heart and soul into it, and they had some shi*ty things happen. It’s called respecting them enough to know they put something incredible out even though they had some crap to go through. Someone else said “if your singer can sing, use it,” and damn it, I agree. Greg has a ridiculously beautiful range that goes from screaming to singing in 2.5. So yeah, if you think you can do so much better without being repetitive, boring, and all around lame, I think you should step up and don’t even look into help from bands like DEP, because you obviously think they aren’t great, anymore.

  18. I like the video a lot, very clever.

  19. I like the video a lot, very clever!

  20. I love this music video, one of their best work, really well done. seems like a really good time. congratulations.

  21. Dep is amazing, new cd is amazing, you will never see another band put out as much energy on stage! Most people that talk *$$* on here are just jealous b/c they will never be as talented as these guys.

  22. I love this song, but this music video is awful. Reliance upon a cg/special effect gimmick is no substitute for real visual interest. Watch this thing with the sound off. You’ll cringe. And don’t tell me, “Of course it sucks without the sound. Its a music video.” That’s just lazy. Yes, the job of the film is to compliment the music, but that’s not an excuse for lazy film making. Their video for ‘Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants’ was pretty decent. This is just boring. I think it detracts from the song.

  23. this song is awesome and so is the cd. I love all of your albums and i agree with “Richard from Opposite Box”, if your singer can sing…USE IT. it makes for a much more interesting dynamic. Music is supposed to take the listener to different places and levels and i think the new album does that really really well.If any of you DEP guys read these comments take the criticism, but know that they are wrong…your doing a great job…branching out is never a bad thing…its not like your vocals are processed out the ass like all the pop punk BS thats going around now.keep up the great work guys. and btw the last 3 songs off “Ire Works” are sweet as hell

  24. you #@$~# never cease to amaze me with your rhetoric ?~?%#**@…

  25. aw man. come on, guys. did you really have to make a video for this song? this and black bubblegum are the only bad songs on the record. milk lizard is not “musical maturity,” it’s a step backwards.

great album, though. fix your face is brutal.

  26. i thought the video was cute. the new album is A LOT different from previous *%*@ but still pwns faces regardless.

  27. DEP is the greatest. This song, not so much.

  28. wow, I never thought I would see the day when the monster that is DEP would copy off of Everytime I Die. But, they did. Ah well, at least I saw the video before I wasted my money on the CD

  29. Great song, alright video. I understand the why a lot of people are not into Ire Works, it’s super different than previous Dillinger cds. But they can’t be faulted for trying something new and growing as artists & musicians.

  30. I really like the video, it is way different than anything DEP has done before! You guys are hot! Can we see more skin next time? Good job guys!

  31. 43% Burnt, Sugar Coated Sour, Sunshine the Werewolf and When Good Dogs Do Bad Things are always going to be my favorite songs by DEP, but the new album really is amazing. A lot of you are whining about them selling out or writing sh*tty music, but try writing songs yourself! When you’ve been doing it for as long as they have sometimes you just want to “try something different.” If your singer can sing - use it! Just because your original singer was a screamer (no disrespect, Dimitri) doesn’t mean you have to carry on in that tradition. DEP is evolving with every new album. I also saw them in Nashville on the 22nd and they put on THE BEST show I’ve ever seen, by them or any other band. They played a bunch of stuff off the new album, and only a couple of the so-called “different” songs like “Milk Lizard.” I still thought it kicked @$$. Like the guy above said, Calculating Infinity was a master piece, but as the guys get older they’re going to branch out and get curious as to what else they can do. That’s the evolution of music - always looking for the next level. In 5 years they may be writing the same style of music as Calculating Infinity or Under the Running Board, they could evolve into the Next Bungle or they may do what Mudvayne did and sell out completely. No matter what I’m still going to love them because I know that no matter what they write in the future I’m still going to be able to punch some kid in the mosh pit while yelling “I smell that wh*re!”

  32. This one song does sound like ETID (or maybe The Bronx) but it’s the only one that sounds like it on the album. The great thing about Ire Works is how versatile it is. They’ve got the typical searing DEP tracks, but also some cool electronics going on, crazy percussion, and (the good kind of) restraint that adds layers to their music.

I got into them through Calculating Infinity, and their latest release isn’t a half hour onslaught of nonstop crazy guitar riffs, but they’ve grown in ways that do laps around their tech metal contemporaries. If you can’t see that, it’s most likely because you’re too busy beating off to third generation metalcore bands that wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for DEP.

  33. I hardly consider butt rock to be “musical maturity.” They certainly could have progressed to actually making interesting music after calculating infinity, but it just seems to have gotten less and less thoughtful. I’m not even talking about being “tech”, they just write cheesy mid-grade songs now.

  34. well, for being off the best record thats come out in years, this video sure was a letdown. boring as ~$@$, and just un-innovative. and what the hell is up with the new guitarist? he looks like he’s too scene-core to even be playing in a shitty band like atreyu. but to whoever said gil can’t play like pennie, you are smoking rock. gil can play everything pennie can, except with groove instead of like a robot, and i bet chris couldn’t touch gil on other stuff. you obviously haven’t listened to the album… try tracks 2, 8, and 10, and then go ahead and talk. but yeah. what a letdown of a video.

  35. i love these guys. unlike some other listeners i like their new stuff as well as their old stuff. i saw them in nashville two days ago and they were amazing. they only played about three tracks from the new album, so for some of the DEP ‘purists’ their live shows still kick. the singer climbed the rafters and jumped into the crowd! it was wicked! if there were no change then where would we be?

probably wiping our @$$es with banana peels, eating corn and nuts out of our own s***

  36. This song is great. Ire Works is one of the best albums to come out in 07.

  37. I’m a little disappointed at the end of the video. I think that when the lady sat on the stool, it should’ve broke.

  38. That explanation about musical versatility is complete crap. If Dillinger were trying to be musically versatile they would have created something fresh, and original instead of just trying to make an Every Time I Die cover album. I think “Irony is a dead scene” showed their versatility, this just shows them hitting a creative void.

  39. versatility, my a$$… he just can’t play like chris is all! i miss chris pennie!!!

  40. @ Everyone who is complaining:

    It’s called musical maturity.

Grow up faggots, if they made calculating infinity 3 times, #~$% would get old and stale.

  41. all their cds are fine your complaining that its not the same cd as calculating infinity im just happy that their still together and were able to replace mike patton and not just become a really generic band

  42. YOU GOTTA LSTEN TO THA ALBUM AZ A WHOLE MTHFCKA
-DILLINGER STILL KICKZ CH’ALL BOI AZZ

    UGK 4 LIFE
    R.I.P. PIMP C

  43. wow. this is horrible. i guess you cant qualify this as selling out… just sucking…

  44. Hey, so check it out, to answer the last two responses… I’ll quote Dillinger’s new drummer Gil Sharone,

“Let me tell you about something, a thing called versatility, and musicianship, and developing a passion for more than one style of music. Through versatility, for those who don’t know what being versatile means, that means you are able to do MORE THAN ONE F**CKIN THING.”

Wake up dudes, theres more out there than just shredding tech metal with diminished scales and off time rhythms. So go buy a Miles Davis record or something and shut the f**k up.

“It’s called Rock and Roll kids… get into it.”

  45. What a shame. Calculating Infinity was an incredible album, but Dillinger Escape Plan has just gone downhill from there. A tragedy.

  46. I milked my panties.

  47. What happened you say?

Folks like Everytime I Die sold more records then Dillinger, that’s what happened.

Forget all this, long live sludge!

    Doom on!

  48. this is gay ?@%# weak as @@@~ what happend to dep

  49. […] Jackson wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerptIs this video worth breaking your foot for? That’sa rhetorical question, but the answer’s irrelevant. 50. God, this band is so good.

  51. Kind of similar to the “Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants Video.” Except there’s a flying bar stool in this one.
