Prong have never been the most decisive band in the world. So, when we asked them for a Bang of the Week they couldn’t decide who to plug or even who should plug it. Finally, they decided to send us two, one from frontman Tommy Victor and another from drummer Aaron Rossi. Since we’ve got no real space limitations, we’ll give ‘em both to you.
Victor’s bang is for the Exodus thrashfest “Riot Act.” Now, a lot of dudes recently have jumped on the its-cool-to-like-thrash bandwagon, but Victor ain’t one of ‘em. Prong actually started out blending thrash and hardcore in the late ’80s before amalgamating their trademark serrated industrial-metal hybrid, which first surfaced on 1990’s excellent Beg to Differ. So, when Victor praises Exodus, he speaks from years of knowledge and experience. He was there when the late Paul Baloff first screamed “Bonded by Blood,” stuck by ‘em through the Steve “Zetro” Sousa years and still remains a fan.
“I always liked the band and this is a killer track,” Victor ways, explaining his choice of Exodus’ “Riot Act” for Bang of the Week. “[Rob Dukes] is a cool, new vocalist. [Exodus are] one of the best thrash metal bands of all time.”
Now, here’s the vid for “Riot Act”
As for Rossi, his props go to Throwdown and their video for “Holy Roller.”
“I had the honor to play drums for Throwdown when I was 18 years old,” he tells the HBB Blog. “We played a show at a kung fu dojo in Thousand Oaks, California. I had one day to rehearse the songs, and it was only one show, but oh my f–king God, those kids went nuts!! Orange County, this one’s for you!!”
Then, on a complete tangent, Rossi blurts, “Ha! Sevendust has a song called ‘Beg to Differ.’”
Maybe we’ll get to that another time, but for now, here’s Throwdown’s “Holy Roller”:
