For their first video in three years, Florida death metal veterans Obituary turned to renegade comic book publisher Hart Fisher to direct the clip for "Evil Ways." Shortly before heading out for their European tour, the members gathered at Dan's Three Corners Bar, a 70-year-old establishment in Gibsonton, Florida and spent the day filming.
"We wanted a video that fit what the band is really like and in a location where you might find us having a cool one on any given day," singer John Tardy told Headbangers Ball Blog. "I think the locals and regulars probably thought we were out of our minds, but Dan, the owner, was so cool it didn't seem to faze him. He actually let us in and left us alone in the bar by ourselves to film." (To read more and watch the new vid, click "more")
Initially, Hart wanted to incorporate various comic book elements in the video, but ultimately agreed that the clip should be more straightforward and bare bones. "The more we talked with him and worked in pre-production, the more he got the understanding of the kind of simple band that we are and that we didn’t want to do something totally not us," Tardy said.
After shooting "Evil Ways," Obituary discovered that Dan's Bar, which has existed since 1936, is scheduled to be closed soon. "It's set to be torn down and the land re-developed," Tardy said. "We did not know this at the time of filming, so it is nice that it will be forever remembered in this video."
"Evil Ways" comes from Obituary's seventh studio album, Xecutioner's Return, which came out last year. The band is currently in the middle of an international tour and will embark on a U.S. tour this fall.
