This one ain't really fair, but whoever comes out the winner, the legendary Max Cavalera will emerge triumphant, so we can live with that. The former frontman of Sepultura has formed two bands since his departure from that legendary thrash outfit. The first, Soulfly, has blended nu-metal, tribal sounds and thrash into a hateful and intoxicating cocktail of aggression and spite. More recently, however, Cavalera has reunited with his brother Igor after a silence of over 10 years and formed Cavalera Conspiracy.
To further complicate matters, Cavalera brought Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo into the mix as well as Gojira bassist Joe Duplantier. The band's old-school thrash-punk offering, Inflikted, is laden with groove and fueled with adrenaline, and stands as one of our favorite discs so far this year. However, the new Soulfly, Conquer, which comes out July 29, ain't too shabby either, and the band's last offering, Dark Ages, was a genuine ass-scorcher.
Obviously, since Cavalera Conspiracy only started last year, Soulfly has much more history; the band's new one will be its sixth studio album. But, it could be argued, even though the Conspiracy are relatively new, the band is also steeped in experience, since the core, Max and Igor, honed their chops together and played with each other on six albums before their lengthy feud began. However, don't cast your ballot for Cavalera Conspiracy simply because of your love for old-school Sepultura. A vote for one is not a vote for the other. Okay, now that we've thoroughly confused ourselves it's time for you to decide.
