Mike Hrubovcak is best known for his ghastly gore-grind artwork, which has featured mangled bodies, undead atrocities and nauseating acts of female mutilation (among other things). So, we made sure our stomachs weren't full when we opened his latest file for "Nightmare Visions." We were expecting the worst -- desecrated graves, bashed in faces, showers of blood -- but we were still shocked by what we saw.
There wasn't a severed limb, a decomposed corpse or even a drop of blood. The piece -- which Hrubovcak is looking to peddle to a non-gore-obsessed band -- is serene, surreal, almost spiritual. Could it be, Mikey's got religion or is mellowing out with age? Nahhhhh. We're sure his next offering will be up to his old splattery standard.
Here's what Hrubovcak has to say about the transcendent image:
"This particular piece is called 'Apis Mellifera Meditation' (which means "Honey Bee Meditation"). The general concept or inspiration revolves around the chakra and human heart being the beehive and center life source. Bees flow throughout the bloodstream and are commanded at will to spiral free from the body and into the personal sphere of existence."
