After months of waiting, the DVD release of the thrash metal documentary "Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" is finally on the horizon. The flick, which was directed by Rick Ernst, comes out September 16 and for the next four weeks we'll be premiering scenes and segments from the movie.
To start, we offer an exclusive clip from the Exodus section of the movie. Click "more" to hear from Ernst about the band and to watch the footage.
"In addition to being a great band, Exodus are insane," says Ernst, "I kinda liken them to the Motley Crue of thrash metal – not musically but in terms of being maniacs. If Exodus guitarist Gary Holt ever decided to write his version of The Dirt, I have no doubt it would rival Motley’s on the insanity meter."
Their reputation precedes them and with that in mind, I booked my flight to San Francisco (Spring 2004) with trepidation. I flew out to interview the band not knowing what to expect or if they'd even show up. Much to my surprise and delight, they were on time, well spoken and gave me one of the most insightful interviews of the film. When I asked Dave Mustaine, "why was Exodus important?" he quickly smiled and replied, "because they had the best drugs." Dave then proceeded to talk about Exodus' most important contributions -- pioneering thrash metal along with Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and others. When I relayed this story to Exodus guitarist Gary Holt, he simply said, "you should have put that drug thing in the film. We want to be known as the most insane guys in thrash metal."
Now judge for yourselves.
