"I Will Be Heard" is probably our biggest sing-along and the song that has had the most impact globally for the band. People everywhere have the lyrics tattooed on them and it has been our set closer for some time. The original version was on the Tattoo The Earth Live CD which started a huge buzz for us back in 2000. It also appeared in the movie "XXX" starring Vin Diesel which was a number one box office film in many countries. I actually flew to L.A. to edit the track into the movie and got to see the Revolution Studios compound, and was able to view the scene before the CGI was added in. That was a totally new and cool experience for me, which I was honored to be a part of.
The director Rob Cohen and Vin Diesel were both fans of the band and really dug the song. They gave us the opportunity to be heard by millions of people, which was something a hardcore band from Connecticut could have never imagined. I even met Vin Diesel in L.A. while I was on an off-day from Ozzfest, and he was very cool and down to earth guy.
The video for "I Will Be Heard" also appears on the DVD version for the movie "XXX" as an added bonus feature. The song really moves people, and it always makes the entire place explode, which is a great feeling for us. The lyrics are simple and to the point: No matter what you face in your life, no matter what you've been through, you must do your best to have your voice be heard. I think we all want to make a contribution to the world in some way and this song represents that feeling of wanting and needing a purpose. The song also represents a fresh start for the band, which, at the time was basically starting over since our first album had come out in late '97, and we had made member and label changes. The song was about moving on from negative experiences and picking yourself back up, which we did as a band and as individuals at that time. It has been an important anthem for all of our fans and it really took us to a whole new level as a band. The great part about performing the song at this particular show was that the entire audience really sang every word and it was so piercingly loud that it made the hairs on my body stand up.
Every show gives us an adrenaline rush but this one really stands out.
