When it comes to sonic devastation, Today is the Day level the playing field (and everything else within 500 miles of ground zero) like an atomic bomb. And they’ve been doing so since 1994 — back when many deathcore and tech metal musicians were probably still listening to Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey. The band is fronted by gun-totin’, no-bulls–t talkin’ Nashville, Tennessee native Steve Austin, who possesses the strength of the Bionic Man and the ferocity of Attila the Hun. Click “more” to read explosive commentary from Austin and watch Today is the Day’s video for “IED,” which will receive its on-air debut on Saturday’s “Headbangers Ball,” which airs from 1 to 2 a.m. EST. The song originally appeared on the 2007 Today is the Day album Axis of Eden, which remains an unsung classic, so check it out.

We tried to make a song that sounded like a human exploding from the inside, both physically and spiritually. David, our filmmaker, complimented the chaos with a video that takes a schizophrenic, psychedelic slap at reality.

The song is a statement of honesty and truth. It’s about being willing to die for what’s right and live to see justice. I feel like a lot of times I am an IED, an “Improvised Explosive Device,” and when I go off it is in a creative and hateful way you will never forget. And at the same time I’m blasting through problems and life’s situations I’m still trying to have feeling and empathy for the world and people.

I wasn’t there for the actors’ parts, only our live show, which was recorded for video. But we had a f–kin’ sick time at that show. There were kids smashing their faces into each other and beers were flying through the air. Out of control kids in Montreal, man.
