When you've been around since 1996, and you've built a steady underground following by playing extreme death metal/grindcore, and then all of a sudden a bunch of new, young deathcore bands come along and steal your thunder by squealing like pigs and playing breakdown after breakdown, you're bound to get a little ticked off. So it is with Cattle Decapitation.
But instead of tracking down Whitechapel and Suicide Silence and firebombing their apartments, the San Diego vegetarian noise demolitionists took the Cattle by the horns and steered their music in an even more technical and dissonant direction. Cattle Decapitation's new album, The Harvest Floor, is a virulent feast of savage vocals, ear-bursting guitar scree and stomp-and-clomp rock rhythms that runs circles around the latest music by most of the bands they've been reluctantly sharing bills with.
We recently phoned up vocalist Travis Ryan and talked about writing and recording The Harvest Floor the advantages of working under pressure, getting Jarboe to guest on the album, animal rights and the eventual death of deathcore.
