Starting, well, today, we'll start reminiscing over some of our favorite videos of the year to give you guys some incentive to head over to the "Headbangers Ball Best of 2008 Countdown" page on MTV2.com and vote for your top picks.

Voting runs until December 15. The winning vids as chosen by viewers will be aired December 20 on the final episode of "Headbangers Ball" this year. The show runs from 2 to 3 a.m. Winners will be announced on the Blog on December 19, at which time we will also announce our personal picks for top videos of the year.

Congratulations to Pelican, whose new video "Lost in the Headlines" has been voted back by readers for next week's episode of "Headbangers Ball." You guys also weighed in strongly for Norma Jean and Opeth, but in the end Pelican emerged victorious. And despite our strong endorsement of Blind Myself's "Lost in Time," the clip garnered not a single vote.

Not to sway anyone's vote here, but if you missed Blind Myself's "Lost in Time" video because you were too busy gorging yourself with Thanksgiving leftovers, you missed a treat as tasty as pumpkin pie. The animated video features a Hungarian band that gets inspired by the horror movie "Lifeforce" and proceeds to suck the life out of Slipknot, Metallica, Ozzy and Michael Jackson to make it to the top. And if you're not impressed by cartoon carnage, you've got clips by Six Feet Under, Norma Jean, Opeth and others to choose from. The results are in from our viewer’s poll of the top Headbangers Ball videos of the year and, we gotta say, they differ significantly from our own top choices.

Voters chose Mushroomhead's “12 Hundred” for the top video slot. The horror-themed clip is grisly and bizarre, appealing to fans of damp basements, dangling chains, long needles and, of course, homemade operating tables. The runner up was Dream Theater, whose surreal video “Constant Motion” depicts a giant ant running around a traffic signal that’s leaking water and metal pendulum balls clacking together over a roaring flame. No insects or balls were injured during the making of this clip.

It's already almost mid-December and that means time is running out to vote for your favorite metal videos from 2007. We've already highlighted some of our favorites, and today we'll bring up another, but as you've pointed out on multiple occasions, we don't know sh--. So, show us how much smarter than us you are by concocting the definitive list of the most bangin' videos of the year.

Considering how much attention was focused on Down this year -- and deservedly so -- we've gotta select "On March the Saints" as one of the top clips of 2007.

The stark, contrasty vid, shot in black & white and directed by Rio Hackford, is for a song from the band's third album Over the Under. The disc was Down's first recording since 2002's Down II and one that reestablished them as contenders for the heavy metal throne. If the music sounds like a snakepit of venom, infected wounds and skeletal remains, keep in mind the circumstances in which it was created. Not long after the band got together to start working, Hurricane Katrina devastated their home town of New Orleans and left them incommunicado for several months. Tack on Anselmo's agonizing back pain and subsequent surgery and the psychic scars caused by the murder of Dimebag Darrell, and you've got the ingredients for a lethal, devastatingly beautiful slab of metal.

Here's another one of our top choices, Machine Head's "Now I Lay Thee Down." The clip was shot in February and additional footage was filmed in August. Mike Sloat directed, working in various locations around San Francisco, but mostly in and around the Regency Center, a theater built in 1909.

According to the band, “The video is a play about a past time in which a strange and grotesque man, who is shunned by society and outcast, decides that he wants to know what it’s like to die. He asks his lover, the only person who cares for him, to take his life. Reluctantly, she does. But then she becomes so distraught and miserable about losing her only love that she decides she must take her own life as well to be with him forever. The play ends with the two lovers together again, at last in the afterlife. The curtain drops and the entire cast bows to the audience.”

Below, is the video for Mastodon's "Sleeping Giant," which is one of weirdest things we've seen in a while. This sliver of science fiction looks like something from "Mystery Science Theater," but with a much better soundtrack that doesn't have any theramin. The guys from Mastodon aren't featured at all in the apocalyptic video, but there are plenty of miniature dinosaurs, monsters and aliens that are just as scary looking.

"Sleeping Giant" was directed by Roboshobo. "The concept for the video was kind of my take on the mythology that seems to be encapsulated in the album," the director told Headbangers Ball Blog. "When I mentioned to [drummer] Brann [Dailor] and everyone the idea of giving it a period feel like [Michael Anderson’s ‘Logan’s Run’ or [Alejandro Jodorowsky’s] 'The Holy Mountain,' they lit up at the idea of a Jodorowsky vibe. I think its a nice blend of science fiction and surrealism."
