Papa Roach are back and, judging from the makeup and designer-t-shirts they're wearing in their latest press photos, they're on some sort of Avenged Sevenfold/Atreyu kick. But even if they're trying to keep up with their times visually -- which, when you get right down to it, is really just about tryin' to look like mid '80s Motley Crue -- musically Papa Roach are still just a hard-rockin' band of degenerates. And while they're not heavy enough anymore to sound like Iron Maiden, fans of 2004's The Paramour Sessions should be pleased with their fourth major label album, Metamorphosis, which comes out March 24. Last week, we brought you Episode I of "The Making of Mastodon's Crack the Skye". Today we follow up with Episode VIII. What happened to the other six episodes, you ask? Well, Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher are huge "Star Wars" fans, and those movies didn't come out in sequential order; hence, Episode VIII, in which Mastodon discuss guitarist Brent Hinds' 2007 brush with death and how that inspired the songs on Crack the Skye. We're genuinely torn about Sonic Syndicate. One one level, they're a metalcore version of Linkin Park, combining a little fire and brimstone with a whole lot of sugary syrup. But then, they'll play a riff or lay down a vocal growl that temporarily wins us over. They look kinda like a Swedish Avenged Sevenfold without the makeup (whether that's good or band depends on your tastes), and they've got a super-hot chick bassist that earns them some eye candy points in our book. But does their music hold up? Click more to watch their new video for "Powershift" and leave your comments to let us know what you think. Read more...
