This is a place built on history," Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor told the crowd part way through the band's first appearance at New York's legendary Madison Square Garden. "Well, tonight we're making our own f--king history."

For more than 90 minutes, Slipknot did just that, performing a high-impact set of skull-bashing songs that left few questioning why such an extreme band was booked at such a high profile venue. Part sinister performance art troupe, part daredevil stunt team, the nine-piece Des Moines, Iowa outfit stormed through material from all four of their Roadrunner studio albums, venting their misanthropic rage and aggression in equal torrents of ferocity and showmanship. And even though Slipknot only played two songs from their newest album, All Hope is Gone, "Dead Memories" and "Psychosocial," the musicianship and chaos kept the audience enthralled throughout the set. Last night, Slipknot stepped onstage and destroyed New York City. Of course, that's nothing new. The Des Moines, Iowa nine-piece have been doing just that on a regular basis since 1999. But this time they hopped on the shoulders of giants and proceeded to beat the looming bastards to the ground.

The Knot were performing in the legendary Madison Square Garden, they were headlining and the event was completely sold out. Check back Monday for a complete review of the show. For now, take a look at our photo gallery of Sliknot and opening band Coheed and Cambria. Sadly, by the time we received our photo pass Trivium had already left the stage. For those of you who aren't sure what the hell Trivium frontman Matt Heafy is talking about in the band's new single "Throes of Perdition," "hell" is the operative word. Throes of perdition literally means "struggle of eternal damnation," which is something of which Trivium seem to have been spared. Read more...

The WTF story of the day goes to mask-wearing metal terrorists Slipknot and Dragonfly-riding prog-rockers Coheed and Cambria, which will tour together in the new year. And if we're interpreting the symbols correctly, this is certainly one of the seven signs of the apocalypse. Trivium will open the show and, perhaps, assume the role of lukewarm water between the fire and ice iconoclasts. Read more...

There are some pretty cool metal magazines in the U.S. catering to every taste from pop metal to black metal. Sometimes the publications come with fold out posters or codes that allow you to download previously unreleased songs from the mags' Web sites. But when it comes to value-added packaging, America's got nothing on the Brits.

In the UK, magazines frequently come with bonus CDs or DVDs, and they're usually not just compilations of pre-existing stuff. Often, they're so good they could have been released on their own without the magazine. Case in point: On July 16, Maiden Heaven - A Tribute to Iron Maiden will hit British newsstands bundled with the latest issue of Kerrang! The disc features top-name bands, including Metallica, Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold and Black Tide covering tracks by Iron Maiden. To hear 30 second snippets of each and rate them from "one" to "ten" click "more". Read more...
