Time to crack the Mastodon fortress just a little more with part 2 of three posts of interview snippets with the band about its latest album, Crack the Skye, which is still in heavy rotation on our personal stereo system and will likely hold fast as our album of the year. Then again, it's only April, but the bar has been set mighty high. Click "more" to watch. Read more...

Right now, Mastodon are lumbering through Canada and will reach American shores with openers Kylesa and Intronaut on April 29. The tour will wrap up with a hometown show in Atlanta on May 15, then Mastodon will be off to Europe to open for Metallica. To show our support, we'll continue to blast the band's video for "Divinations" from atop the rafters. And we've also got a batch of new interview clips to roll over out the next few days. Here's the first installment. Read more...

Chicago's self-proclaimed "angriest band in the world," Oceano, has even more reason to be pissed now that Mastodon has taken top honors in this week's Your Vote Counts and earned the right to return to the next edition of "Headbangers Ball," which airs Saturday at 2 a.m.

See, Mastodon shouldn't have really been eligible for the title. They won the return slot the first week we played "Divinations," and once an artist wins Your Vote Counts, the rule has always been they can't win again for another couple months. This week, however, we let readers vote for any of the new videos from the last show just for the hell of it. Metal's supposed to be nothing if not rebellious, right?

But rage not, Oceano. Even though your video "District of Misery" didn't technically win, we're re-airing it anyway on the next "Ball" out of a combination of respect and, well, fear. Click "more" to watch both videos, and catch them again Saturday on MTV2. Read more...

Let's say you started spring break a little early and you've been pretty much braindead for the past week? Do we have the cure for you. No, not a blood mary with a raw egg, we've got links to all the killer HeadbangersBlog.com posts you might have missed. Did you hear our revealing and hysterical podcast interview with Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen? As predicted, Mastodon's excellent new video for "Divinations," swept this week's Your Vote Counts to earn a spot on the next episode of "Headbangers Ball." The Atlanta band beat out Trivium, Static-X, Dragonforce and Within the Ruins to claim the title. Read more...

We don't want to sway voters or anything, but we're pretty sure we're going through the motions with this week's "Your Vote Counts." Sure, Static-X's "Stingwray" video is kind of cool and it does feature a former porn star and all, but it would take a video on the level of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" to top Mastodon's new clip "Divinations."

So, we'll just declare Mastodon this week's winner now and encourage you to leave comments about why the band, the video and director Roboshobo deserve the frickin' Nobel prize of metal. Click "more" to watch the video and see the other contestants who don't have a chance of winning. Read more...

We're beyond thrilled to present the premiere of Mastodon's new video for "Divinations," the first single from the band's astonishing new album Crack the Skye, which comes out March 24 in both a single-disc edition and a disc plus DVD version, which includes photographer and filmmaker Jimmy Hubbard's candid, revealing documentary of the making of the album. Prog metal heroes Mastodon have just announced a special iTunes package that offers fans an instrumental version of their entire new album Crack the Skye along with the regular version. Sounds sweet to us. And here's something else that's pretty sweet: The behind-the-scenes video "The Making of Crack the Skye: Episode IX," in which the band members discuss how they tracked lead and background vocals for the record. Behold! Read more...

Last week, we brought you Episode I of "The Making of Mastodon's Crack the Skye". Today we follow up with Episode VIII. What happened to the other six episodes, you ask? Well, Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher are huge "Star Wars" fans, and those movies didn't come out in sequential order; hence, Episode VIII, in which Mastodon discuss guitarist Brent Hinds' 2007 brush with death and how that inspired the songs on Crack the Skye.
