As the drummer for post-thrash band Shadows Fall and neo-death metal outfit Burning Human, Jason Bittner plays a gamut of styles from skittering prog fills to powerhouse blast beats. So, we're hardly surprised to find that his iPod is filled with music from all ends of the hard rock/metal spectrum. He's got a little Soundgarden on there, some Meshuggah and of course Pantera. Plus, the dude likes a little variety from beyond the metal vortex. We applaud his choice of XTC, Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers. But Madonna and Crowded House might be even a little beyond our eclectic tastes. Still, the dude earns bonus points for his inclusion of The Jerky Boys, which made us chuckle even without hearing the track. On a scale of 100, we give Bittner's Random Shuffle a solid 84. We were never good at betting on horses, either. Our prediction that In Flames would win this week's "Your Vote Counts" was way off. Shadows Fall's "Forevermore" won with nearly 50 percent of the votes. Misery Signals' "A Certain Death" came in second.

Now, click "more" to watch "Forevermore" and a few more Shadows Fall videos. Read more...

You should know by know that if you want to vote for "Your Vote Counts," you have to register to be a part of the MTV Community. Here's how:

Sign up at the bottom of the screen and under "Profile URL" type something to identify you — preferably some word that includes a couple numbers. This will be attached to a long URL address that will be your private address for the site. So, go do it now or suffer the fate of your peers, whose idea of "ass-kicking" might not be quite as astute as yours.

This week's "Headbangers Ball" aired the premiere of the new In Flames video "Alias," which, we're guessing, will be a shoe-in for this week's contest. But a democracy's a democracy, so there are also other new videos for viewers to chose from. Click "more" to see the complete list: Read more...

Deathcore fan Barack Obama learning to make devil horns

Hopefully, by now most of you have signed up to be part of the MTV Community. If you haven't, you might wanna get your ass in gear -- especially if you want to submit comments to HeadbangersBlog.com or take part in this week's "You Vote Counts" and help determine what video from the last "Headbangers Ball" returns for Saturday's show.

Just scroll to the bottom of the screen and sign up. It’s easy, and all submitted information is confidential. In addition to being able to post comments, MTV Community members will receive access to music and video premieres we can’t offer on the Blog. One thing about the sign-up sheet, though. People are getting a little tripped up by the box asking for the users “Profile URL.” So, here’s what to do.

Under "Profile URL" just type something to identify you — preferably some word that includes a couple numbers. That will then be attached to a long URL address that will be your private address for the site.

We now return to our regularly scheduled post -- "Your Vote Counts." On Saturday, we aired some pretty big premieres by Hatebreed, Underoath, The Sword and Carnifex. Choose one of them or someone else from the list below. The act with the most votes will win a return slot to Saturday's episode. As always, past winners are not eligible and neither are videos from old albums. In other words, only pick from our list. Voting runs between now and 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Click “more” to see the complete list.

Those of you who are old enough to remember National Lampoon's "...or we'll shoot this dog" advertising campaign might appreciate the promotional pitch for this week's "Your Vote Counts." And maybe some of the rest of you twisted f--kers will still think it's funny (if not, we welcome the hate mail).

When you get over your disgust or stop laughing your asses off, it'll be time to cast your ballot for this week's contestants. Choose one artist from the list below. The act with the most votes will win an encore appearance on Saturday's show. As always, past winners are not eligible for your vote; that means last week’s winner The Gates of Slumber can't win and neither can Lair of the Minotaur or Terror.

Also, only ONE vote is allowed per IP address. It doesn't matter if you use a different screen name. If you vote twice from the same computer, you will be disqualified. Voting runs between now and 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Click "more" to see the complete list and let's get rockin'. Read more...

Much of next week's "Headbangers Ball" is already programmed, but there's one slot that's open and it's up to you to decide what video gets played. Yes, it's time for you to take a stand and choose one new video from last weekend's show to return next week. As always, past winners are not eligible for your vote; that means last week's winner Terror can't win and neither can Whitechapel, so don't waste your time voting for either.

Still, we've got some pretty strong candidates remaining, including The Gates of Slumber with "Trapped in the Web," which we premiered last week, Slipknot's "Psychosocial," we received its Headbangers debut last week and the new one by Shadows Fall, "Forevermore."

The rules are simple. Only ONE vote is allowed for each IP address. It doesn't matter if you use a different screen name. If you vote twice from the same computer, you will be disqualified. Voting runs between now and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, so get crackin'. Click "more" to see the complete list, watch last week's winner for inspiration and let the voting begin. Read more...

A short message before we get into this week's competition: Last week the astute judges of "Your Vote Counts" noticed that many of the votes being cast were coming from the same IP addresses. These voters were disqualified. Only one vote can come from a single IP address. If your roommate already cast his ballot, go find another computer.

Now on to this this week's challenge. Last week, Whitechapel won our contest, so you can't vote for them again. Other than that, submissions from the list below must be received by 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23. Feel free to include a comment, which may be published when we announce the winner. Oh, and you may not be listening to hair metal when you vote. Click "more" to see this week’s choices: Read more...

Man, I hate the f---ing DMV. It is a bastion of bureaucracy designed to torture your mind and soul with inane procedures, obscenely long waits and cheerless workers devoid of any desire to assist or explain. It doesn't matter why you came to the DMV -- it could be a simple license renewal -- it always puts you instantly on the defensive, fearful that at any instant someone is going to impound your car.

This is my third time through the line today. The estimated waiting time on the ticket is a cruel joke. It says five minutes. Nothing in this building has ever taken five minutes. Even a bag of microwave popcorn takes an hour and a half in the break room. It is now 2:45. This death march through red tape hell began at 8:30 a.m. on this beautiful Monday. Read more...

It's a pretty good time for metal. This week, you'll find Shadows Fall's first new studio album in three years, as well as some premo emo metal from the drummer of Underoath and the screamers in Poison the Well. And let's not forget Black Sabbath: The Dio Years, which features three new songs from the only other Sabbath singer that matters.

Shadows Fall — Threads of Life (Atlantic) Okay, here's the question. Will Shadows Fall's ascension from the minor leagues to the majors make them pennant champions or will they be lost in the shuffle? It's too early to say, but they've sure delivered the album that could make them the next Lamb of God. Threads of Life is heavy, immediate and packed with the kind of infectious hooks that echo in your head, even as you sleep. Songs like "Redemption," "Stormwinds" and "The Great Colapse" are less derivative than those of most new American metal bands and they're just as endebted to thrashers like Testament and Exodus as they are to Scandinavians such as At the Gates and In Flames. Seek refuge from the heat in the comfort of the Shadows.
All out War — Assassins in the House of God (Victory) Hardcore metal that combines the minor-key guitar violence of Slayer with the pummeling screamscapes of Sick of it All. The band's fifth release should further help unite fans of hardcore and thrash metal without ever resorting to melodic, sing-songy choruses.

The Almost — Southern Weather (Victory) A more rock-based side project from Underoath drummer Aaron Gillespie, The Almost combines jangly emo guitars, ripping riffs, strained vocal yowls and some pretty irresistible melodies that should appeal equally to fans of Fall Out Boy and Underoath.

American Head Charge — Can't Stop the Machine (Nitrus) The band's third album is a surging mix of metal, alt-rock and industrial music that proves there is still life after nu-metal. Tracks like "JSYK Wired all Wrong" and "Take What I've Taken" could help return the band to the public eye following a few years in limbo.

Black Sabbath — Black Sabbath: The Dio Years (Rhino) For years, Ozzy Osbourne has been the focal point of Black Sabbath. Now it's Ronnie James Dio's turn. In the ‘80s, Dio replaced Ozzy in the band after the Ozzman was fired, and played on three killer albums before drifting into the mist. Black Sabbath: The Dio Years compiles the best of the Dio Sabbath era and features three new songs that fit in well with the rest of their catalog. In case you're still not sold, have a flashcard. Devil horns now, please. http://www.rhino.com/flashcards/blacksabbath/

Poison the Well — Versions (Ferret) Screamo metal fans, this is the album you've been waiting four years for. Following a puzzling stint on Atlantic Records, Versions marks Poison the Well's return to an indie label and a resurrection of the fury and craft that defined them on their debut album, 2002's Tear From the Red. Now mosh and cry.

Static-X — Cannibal (Warner Bros.) This industrial metal band has flirted with various styles including nu-metal, technical metal and hard rock, but with their sixth album, Cannibal, the group has return to the short, sharp shocks and simple arrangements of their 1999 debut, Wisconsin Death Trip, and with crushing results.

Saxon — The Inner Sanctum (SPV/Steamhammer) One of the forefathers of the new wave of British heavy metal, Saxon simply refuse to go away. Their new album, The Inner Sanctum is packed with dramatic arrangements, galloping rhythms and fist-in-sky choruses that'll make you swear 1981 never ended.

In case your just getting to know the band Seemless, you'll notice some familiar faces, since its members come from metal giants Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and Overcast. Seemless has announced that they will be the tour support on Soil's North American dates.
